Sumac tan question

Alright, so I have frittered away hours reading various posts and websites on the how too of veg tanning with sumac but...how many sumac leaves shall a gal harvest to be safe for say one medium hide....

I typically use 1 1/2 to 2 pounds of leaves to every pound of hide (both weights taken when dried).

Thanks for the info...good to know.I understand the green leaves have more tannin than the red.so my sources say.

My wife uses the seed heads from the sumac for dye baths they contain tannin also , like wize walnut hulls work as well as the leaves for dyes

I cram in about as many leaves as I can, bury the hide in there and then try to remember to move it around now and then, so it doesn't tan too uneven. Seemed to me like the berrys helped things along....

You dyed Braintan with sumac berries?? Interesting .....what color did you end up with there and what color was the hide when you started the dye process. I know where there are a lot of sumac tops...

Sumac berrie dye is very dark. Makes brown braintan. This batch had been boiled and used on traps-then I used some of it on the barktan. Simmering the leaves for a new batch of "barktan". I just leave...

sounds like steeping to me!I am pretty darn sure the rust from the traps would absolutely make a darker tan/ dye- it would oxidize in contact with the tannins. I one time accidentally left my metal...

I have done both stem on and off- the draw back with stem on is they are pokey to my hands, but i just beat them up good in a paper feed sack before getting the leaves wet and pick out the large...
